Charlie Kirk’s Assassination - Effects, Reverberations, Responses

Mark Virkler's picture

I scanned the news yesterday morning (9/10/25), and said to my wife, “Wow, the battle just heated up. The warfare in our nation has just gone up a notch.”  That afternoon, Charlie Kirk, founder of “Talking Point USA” was assassinated.

This morning’s Coffee and Covid newsletter was devoted totally to this event and the trauma it leaves us with. I highly recommend you read the entire newsletter available here.

Below are some quotes:

Mild-mannered mega-influencer, married father of two young children, and unapologetic Christian, Charlie Kirk, 31, has been assassinated. As the news circulated late yesterday, I —along with many others— experienced a cascade of overwhelming emotions: stun and shock at the grisly shooting, horror and grief at the news he’d died, and unrelieved rage accompanied by an unclear, undirected sense of resolution. But … resolution to do what, exactly?

If you did visit BlueSky this morning, you’d be horrified. There can be no doubt that a shockingly large number of Democrats want to murder Republicans with whom they disagree. That’s kind of a problem.

Targeting Charlie Kirk was also a huge mistake. His death signals that the time for talking seems to have passed. They killed the guy whose mantra was, “let's talk about it.” So … where do we go from here? Are we supposed to now also say, “let's talk about it?"

Charlie prophetically predicted this. It was almost like God had prepared him. In another dark irony, in April, Charlie Kirk posted about what he called “assassination culture” and called the left a “ticking time bomb:”

(Coffee and Covid does include a chart showing about 50% of those at “BlueSky” felt it was OK to kill Trump and Elon. Wow!?

End of quotes from Coffee and Covid

Two powerful and moving tributes

Here are some initial reflections on how we are to respond

  • First, we pray for comfort for his wife and two young children and his friends who are in deep mourning.
  • We also pray that this martyr's seed that has been planted will bring forth 1 million others who will arise and speak truth to the youth, as Charlie Kirk has done.
  • We pray for God to anoint the government to find the perpetrator and bring them to justice. Romans 13:4 says that government “is a minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil.

So what exactly was Charlie Kirk known for? He was passionate about sharing ideas. He invited those who disagreed with him to come to the front of the line, and to share their ideas so they could dialogue with Charlie which they would do publicly from the front of the arena while the rest of the multitude would listen and learn.

Open, ongoing debate was his passion, not murder, hatred and revenge. He could disagree with a person’s ideas, and not attack the person, but instead offer an invitation, “Come let’s talk, and dialogue and debate ideas and see where that gets us.” He was convinced the best ideas would win, that light dispels darkness, and that what he was called to do was to speak the truth in love and let God do the work of enlightening people’s hearts and minds. Murder was not in his soul. Murder is not to be in our souls either.

The Bible says that “Iron sharpens iron, So one man sharpens another” (Prov. 27:17).

One way iron sharpens iron is when we invite others into dialogue. We speak the truth as we understand it, in love, and invite others to do the same. We can disagree without becoming disagreeable. We don’t need to hate or separate from another just because we disagree (even though denominations have often done exactly this).

Yes, this stance of loving (even my enemies) is hard and impossible to do by the strength of my flesh. This means I must live by the Spirit (Gal. 5:25) because otherwise I find that I am angry, prideful, and filled with rage.

God tells me, “Mark, you cannot even keep the law (Rom. 7). It is only when you walk by My Spirit and listen to My voice, and receive My transforming power that you are able to live in the supernatural and bring My light into the darkness, and release My kingdom (Rom. 8).

It is only as you believe that I work all things out for good (Rom. 8:28) that you can lift up your pain and sorrow to Me to heal, and then press on, doing that which I have asked you to do.

Since the pitch of warfare has increased, it is crucial that every believer be involved in the battle. What is the Lord asking you to do in the fight to overcome darkness and spread His light? Find out and DO IT!

Maybe you are to be on the school board, run for office, homeschool your children, speak truth in love, pray daily for your government, or release divine creativity and healing that points people to God.

I do pray daily for righteousness to be exulted, and wickedness to be removed. I pray for God to raise up the righteous, anoint and protect them, and to remove those who are evil (Isa. 45:6,7). I pray daily for revival in the Church and that the ability to hear God’s voice be enlarged in the Church, and through this, to bring the fire of revival to the Church and to the world.

Personal Journaling

  • Lord, how am I to be engaged is overcoming darkness and spreading Your light?

Hearing God's voice is as simple as: 1) quieting down (Ps. 62:1-5), 2) beholding Jesus at my right hand (Ps. 16:8; Acts 2:25), 3) asking for His revelation and tuning to flowing thoughts and flowing pictures (Jn. 7:37-39; Jer. 2:13; 10 pictures), and 4) recording this flow (Hab. 2:1,2; Rev. 1:9-11). I then test it, ensuring it lines up with Scripture (Ps. 1:2; Jn. 10:35; 1 Thess. 5:2) and is affirmed in the hearts of my three spiritual advisors (2 Cor. 13:1; Prov. 11:14). See this link.
