Hearing God's voice is as simple as: 1) quieting myself down (Ps. 62:5), 2) beholding Jesus at my right hand (Acts 2:25), 3) asking for His input and tuning in to flowing thoughts and flowing pictures (Jn. 7:37-39), and 4) journaling out His words and visions (Rev. 1:9-11). These are then tested, and they must line up with Scripture (Ps. 1:2) and be affirmed in the hearts of my spiritual advisors (2 Cor. 13:1).

Softly,
the old tune
repeats
in humble familiarity.
Notes tumbling,
rhythm rolling,
And lyrics swelling
with memories
of truth experienced.
“What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
“Oh! precious is the flow
that makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.”1
In you is all sufficiency:
power and strength,
healing and hope,
necessity provided,
and lack supplied.
In you
my deepest desires
are realized—
Nothing but the King
Christ Jesus!
You are everything to me—
The breath
of my sleeping lungs
And the light
of my waking eyes.
In you
I live,
and move
and have my being.
By you
the striving
of want
has ceased
And the leeches
of need
have been
eternally
destroyed.
With you
paradise is prepared
And the hell
of endless lust
abandoned.
Nothing but your love—
the pastures
of your presence!
Nothing but your voice—
the stillness
of your waters!
Nothing but the blood—
the covenant blood—
Sweet Shepherd!
I lift my hands
and lower
my pride.
I praise you
with devoted lips,
And worship
with my inmost parts.
I bow prostrate at your feet
and offer
honor
and loyalty
unmeasured.
I choose to love you
with whole heart,
tempered soul,
and infused strength.
I determine to follow you
from the tips
of heaven
to the ends
of the earth.
I commit to serve you
with energized truth
and ferocious faith.
I hum your song happily
and dance gracefully in step,
meekly following your lead
through every glide,
gentle turn,
and intricate gesture.
I quiet myself
to look
and listen,
And to see
and do
All that you show me
in secret.
For performance
is public;
But rehearsal
is private—
Tutoring
intimate
and tender…
Nothing but
your face
before me,
Your lips
whispering,
Our hands
touching.
Nothing but
fused purpose
and shared commitment,
Nothing but
mutual motive
and entwined intention,
Nothing but
perfect union
and satisfied wholeness.
Oh, precious is the flow
that makes me white as snow!
No other fount I know.
Nothing…
Only the cross
of Jesus Christ!
Only the old man
crucified.
“Nevertheless,
I live—
Yet not I,
but Christ lives in me.
And the life I now live
in earthly flesh
I live by the faith
of the Son of God
who loved me
and gave himself
for me.”2
It is not yet revealed
in all clarity
how I shall appear,
But I know
that as I gaze
into your countenance
And abide twirling
in your arms
I shall be transformed
into your likeness!
Old things
have passed away;
Behold,
I am new—
and all things
are mine
in metamorphosis.
For all wisdom
is treasured within me
by the mind of Christ,
And everything
pertaining to
life and godliness
He has placed
in my hands.
Nothing
shall separate me
from his love,
I am
his eternal betrothed,
Attired in righteousness
and seated
in heavenly places;
Not by any reasoned scheme
or labored task
that I have done,
But by nothing…
Praise God!
No condemnation!…
Nothing but
the blood
of Jesus!
———————
My dearest child,
What could bring
me down to earth?
Nothing but
your face
before me,
Your prized
redemption,
Your full
reinstatement.
Nothing but
the hope
of Jesus.
What could take me
to the cross?
Nothing but
our future joy
wooing me,
The Father’s compassion
leading me,
The Spirit’s comfort
strengthening me.
Nothing but
a will submitted
and a face of flint.
Nothing but
the love
of Jesus.
Oh, precious
was the cost:
The highest price
ever demanded;
The hardest payment
ever paid;
The greatest value
ever brokered;
for you,
my child!
No other way I know,
Nothing but
my life blood,
for you!
What could raise me
from the dead?
Nothing but
the Judge’s ruling,
the Paraclete’s groaning,
the Bridegroom’s roaring.
Nothing but
the faith of Jesus.
What could crown
creation’s Head?
Lead captivity captive?
Give gifts to men?
Nothing but the power
of Jesus.
Oh, cherished is the flow
that opens prison doors,
heals broken hearts,
mends shattered lives,
And draws brethren
into pleasant unity,
Washing the scarlet division
white with wooly oneness.
No other rock could sow
water
and blood
together
To quench
the wilderness thirst
of separation.
Come, come and drink!
Let the foamy stream
cover
head to foot,
drenching
inside
and out.
Feel the refreshing rivers
and immerse yourself
in holy purity.
Nothing so sweet;
Nothing so quenching;
Nothing so calming
to the restless soul
but the Spirit’s flow…
Step into life
liberty,
and heaven’s
open arms.
Nothing will satisfy…
Nothing but
your risen
Savior.
What can fill
your inner man?
Nothing but
the gift
of Jesus.
What can make
your dreams
come true?
Nothing but
the grace
of Jesus.
Oh, precious is the flow
of abundant life
and eternal bliss,
To you does now bestow
peaceful perfection
and complete contentment.
No other source I know…
Nothing but
my blood
for you,
dear love…
Nothing but my blood,
Love, Jesus!
