The Inner Stance of a Prophet – Interview with Prophetess Charlette Holmes

Mark Virkler's picture

Dr. Charlette Homes received her doctoral degree recently from our school, Christian Leadership University. She is an amazing prophetess whom I have had the opportunity to minister with as a prayer partner on four occasions. Each time, I have been blown away by the accuracy and power of her prophetic gift. The client we are praying with is always left in tears as God reaches deep within their heart, ministering grace and healing.

If you are reading this blog in an email, click here to watch the video on YouTube.

My interview contains the questions below as I ask Charlette to describe in detail her inner posture as she prepares to receive revelation, words of knowledge and wisdom and healing for the client we are praying for. Settle back and enjoy, and learn from her testimony. It is truly thrilling! Something you hardly ever hear and maybe have never heard.

  1. When did you first become aware that you had a prophetic gift?
  2. Would you agree that some are born with this gift, and yet we can all develop and mature in the gift?
  3. As you prepare to receive a prophetic word, what do you do with your mind?
  4. What faculties of your heart do you present to God to fill and flow through (eyes, ears, smell, taste)?
  5. How important is it for you to see their face?
  6. What exactly are you looking at when you see their face? Why?
  7. Where are your eyes fixed when you are prophesying? (Answer: Jesus and the client)
  8. Do you ever touch a client, and if so, what types of things might you experience through touch?
  9. Since I know you do two-way journaling, using the four keys of stillness, vision, flow, and journaling, how is prophesying similar or different from receiving revelation through journaling?
  10. What would you like to say to others who want to develop their prophetic abilities?
  11. Are there any stories or other points you would like to share with us today?

Prophetess Charlette Holmes Shares

I was recently asked by my new best friend, Dr. Mark Virkler, what kind of “process” I go through as a Prophet when providing people with prophetic revelation/information. This interview of sorts goal was to provide some helpful information and instruction for those who are prophetic but may struggle with the “mechanics of prophecy” for the lack of a better explanation.

Admittedly, the questions in this interview challenged me because I have never taken the time to think about what is going on inside me. It has always been a naturally occurring experience so it stretched me tremendously to have to put words to this. I am thankful for this stretching as it has helped me to put language to this process to help me further grow in my knowledge and understanding; and to be able to provide mentoring/coaching to those interested in learning. The Apostle Paul, in I Corinthians 14:5, says: “Now I would have you all speak with tongues, but rather that ye should prophesy: and greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying”. For the Church to be edified, we have to embrace prophecy.

I can imagine that embracing prophecy can be challenging for some in the Church for many reasons. There has been so much misunderstanding and misinformation that has been spread throughout the various dispensations that have sowed seeds of confusion and doubt. Not to mention the various people who have perverted this sacred privilege by monetizing false prophecies promising new cars, houses, marriages, physical healing, etc. that never came to fruition. So, I’m not surprised that there is such division within the Body as it relates to prophecy, but the bottom line is, that prophecy is real and God still uses Prophets and prophetic types to this day.

Before I dive into “my process”, I want to give a definition of what prophecy is and highlight some of the key elements. Prophecy is the act of speaking forth the mind and counsel of God, under divine inspiration. There are a few key elements concerning prophecy from Scripture that give us some clues on what aspects are essential, and those elements include: hearing the voice of God for divine communication, foretelling, and forth-telling, Christ-centered testimony (meaning true prophecy points to and glorifies Christ), and lastly, it’s subject to testing by aligning the prophecy to Scripture and testing it within the community of believers. According to I Corinthians 14:5, the Apostle Paul exclaims that he desires for all in the Church to have the ability to prophesy. So, this is an indication that everyone has access to this gift. There are, however, differences between the Office of a Prophet and those with prophetic gifting, that we will dive into at another time in a separate blog.

Okay, so to discuss the “process” that naturally occurs whenever I am flowing prophetically and dispensing prophetic revelation, I first notice that everything in me is engaged. My whole spirit, soul (which is comprised of my thoughts, emotions, and will), and my whole body are engaged. All my senses (seeing, hearing, tasting, touching, and smelling) are activated and utilized for prophecy to go forth. I am aware of a dual reality so to say, because I am fully engaged and present, but I am aware of Holy Spirit who is fully aware and present as well. It is at this time that I yield myself and allow Holy Spirit to take center stage of my being.

I notice a quiet, calmness which feels like complete peace even in the midst of sometimes chaotic physical environments, where I just know things without ever having known them before (which is directly linked to the spiritual gift of the word of knowledge). As I become aware of the knowing, I begin to pay attention to what I begin to just know, I then pay closer attention to what I am hearing, seeing, and feeling in the moment. Sometimes I hear phrases from the Lord to repeat to whatever person I am with in the moment. I pay attention to what I see both physically and in the supernatural realm, which always looks different based on the person. I look for Jesus and what He is doing and where He is positioned in proximity to the person, and I see at times angels or demonic activity (sometimes snakes, winged creatures, black smoke, etc.). An additional thing about sight is I pay very close attention to the person’s face and eyes. It has been said that the eyes are the windows of the soul so I am looking into the soul of the person to see what is at work within that person’s soul.

I notice what I am feeling in my body (pain, ease, heat, cold, etc.) and emotionally (joy, peace, anxiety, anger, etc.), and these feelings give me indications of where the challenges are and what the person has been feeling/going through. I also pay attention to what I smell as this is an indicator of whether God’s presence is manifested with a sweet smell or a foul/sour smell which indicates demonic activity, idolatry, or witchcraft. Lastly, it is not as prominent for me but there are times when I notice tastes in my mouth which could indicate bitter words, gossip, condemnation, etc., that the person is speaking or someone in their realm of influence is speaking.

One skill that I have developed over the years is not questioning whatever I am hearing, seeing, tasting, feeling, smelling, “knowing” or experiencing. It is not my role to question what the Spirit of the Lord is saying, only to open my mouth and allow Him to speak through me. Once we start to question, doubt is present and we cannot have any traces of doubt because it hinders flow and can even distort the prophesy. Having faith and full assurance is a key element because all prophecy comes from the Lord, and we must have faith and assurance that He is who He says He is (Hebrews 11:6).

Another key that I would like to mention in regard to the process of prophecy is the importance of humility. Humility is crucial and reminds us that it is not of our own volition, skill, or gifting that we do anything, but rather it is depending solely on the Spirit of the Most High God for everything. It is in Him and Him only that we live, move, and have our very being, so reliance on Him through humility cannot be substituted in this process. If humility is absent, you have tapped into the dark realm of soothsaying which will be evil, perverted, and contaminated. There is only one way that we should access the supernatural realm and that is through the guidance of Holy Spirit.

The very last key that I would like to mention is the most important element and that is love. In order to be able to effectively and actively prophesy, you need the love of God in your heart. Love is the foundational piece that we need to do all things, including prophecy. If we don’t have love, everything we do will be useless, ineffective, and insufficient. I Corinthians 13 gives us a clear explanation of the importance of love, and when love motivates prophecy it causes it to flow effortlessly, with accuracy and clarity. Love is the foundation and most important key for Prophets and prophetic types.

I hope this blog has helped put language to what the process of prophecy can look like for some and what are some of the crucial keys in order to ensure that we are in a pure flow for the spirit of prophecy which is the testimony of Jesus according to Revelation 19:10.

How to Walk by the Spirit

How to Walk by the Spirit

by Mark and Patti Virkler | 136 Pages | Previous name "Sense Your Spirit"

Are you like many western Christians who have been taught little about how to sense their spirits? Do you have trouble even defining what spirit sensations feel like within you, much less recognizing them? This training was birthed from Mark’s passion to live out of his spirit, and thus release the anointing of God. The problem he faced was lack of clear biblical definition as to what his spirit felt like. So Mark looked up every verse in the Bible on heart and spirit.
