This Land Is Your Land - Journaling by Debra Guthrie

Dearest Abba,

 

I love you, 

            my God,

            my King!

 

I worship you

            with humbled heart.

 

For you loved me first,

And my hungry heart

            threw off its beggar’s cloak

            and flew into your arms.

 

I read back 

            over some of my writings

And I see,

            hear,

            and feel you

            all over it!

As Grace told me,

            “It won’t let me go!”

Your cords of love

            keep pulling me in,

            closer 

            and closer. 

 

Oh, there was so much more

            that you wanted to tell

            the disciples

            while you were incarnate

            here on earth—

So much of your heart

            that you desired to share!

But you could not,

            for they were not

            yet able

            to bear it.

 

But those hopes

            and dreams

            and murmurings of love

Still stand in the wings

            awaiting an opening

            in the script      

            for revelation!

 

Let now be the time

            when deeper intimacy

            is ushered 

            onto stage center.

Let us be the audience

            whose ears prick up

            to hear the lines

            you have longed to reveal.

 

Speak to us 

            of your love.

Let the scales fall

            from our eyes

And our ears lose

            their dullness.

Let us see and hear

            your unveiled heart—

And respond in kind.

 

You are our God.

It is time

            for us

            to be

            your people.

 

It is time to hear

            the refrains

            from heaven

And declare

            here on earth,

            “Our God reigns!”

“Slow to anger

            and abounding 

            in loving-kindness

            and tender mercies!

“He understands our past

            and the paradigm of lies

            viciously plastered

            upon our persons.”

He will not sit idle

            and indifferent—

Watching the idiocy

            of this world’s ideology 

            take its sowing 

            and reaping toll

            upon us—

            without action.

 

Sin kills,

            and the simple die

            alongside 

            the hardened carcasses

            of fools.

 

But those who will hear—

            with ears willing 

            to tune out

            the mad matrix

            for a single moment

And listen to 

            the melodious strains

            of ancient, unending love

            and eternal faithfulness—

Will turn their eyes 

            and heads

            to participate in 

            this final act

            of mercy.

 

Forgive us, oh LORD,

            for our fathers were stooges,

            and our mothers played the harlot

            with every passing fantasy

            and trash-barrel scraping

            whoremonger. 

 

Though insidious thieves

            stripped us 

            of our identity

And sent us starving

            into the slaughterhouse

            of human decency,

We have heard 

            your call

            to repentance,

            restoration,

            and reconstruction.

 

Lift up your heads

            you downtrodden masses,

And lift up your gates

            you everlasting doors!

 

Who is this King who comes?

Who is this conquering Hero?

It is the King of Glory,

            the God of Wisdom,

            Righteousness,

            and Mercy!

 

Open wide the gates

            and receive His presence!

Open wide your hearts

            and receive His love!

Open wide your mouths

            and receive His blessings!

 

Look to Him

            and live.

The ludicrous promises

            of pontificating peddlers

            of smut and decadence

            have proven false

And their claims

            have dissolved

            to paltry poutings.

 

This earth is the LORD’s creation.

He set the laws

            of the universe

            in motion,

And no insidious decree of man

            can annul them.

 

The wicked may rage

            and build a froth of lies.

Their cup of deception

            may overflow its rim,

But their impertinent bubbles have popped

            and the hangover beats heavy

            upon their brows.

 

Come away 

            from this perverse drummer

And leave the ranks

            of the rotting rank

            stenched with the offal

            of putrified flesh.

Come drink of the water of life

            and live

            in the purity

            of divinely bestowed

            dignity and worth.

 

You were created 

            above the beasts—

Set apart before 

            clay formation.

Step away 

            from the pigpens 

            of degradation,

And take your place

            as regent.

Vomit up

            the nauseous morsels

And push away the plate

            of lying abominations.

Overturn these tables 

            of poisonous fare.

 

You are not the lies

            you have been fed!

Refuse any more refuse!

 

Come to the Truth

            and live.

Come to the Way

            and follow the path

            of love,

            peace,

            joy,

            and dreams fulfilled!

 

There is a way 

            which seems right to man—

            to the mind perverted

            by falsehoods,

            half-truths,

            and lying vanities.

You know.

You have seen its

            scenic signage

            and felt its vicious bite

            of destruction.

 

Come to the ancient paths

            of godliness

            and integrity

            to divine design,

And you will live long

            and your soul will prosper!

 

We are here;

We are ready 

            to hear

            and obey

            and follow 

            your love 

            and logos.

We have heard the Holy Spirit

Calling us by name,

            revealing 

            the unsearchable

            and hitherto unknowable

            mysteries

            of your ardent love

            and holy destiny.

 

You, oh God, 

            are our God 

            forever!

We stand and declare it!

 

Let us be your people

            today—

            this day,

            in every way

            you lead.

 

We take our place

            as kings and priests

            upon this earth

And wait upon your presence

            with holiness

            and the incense

            of unity.

 

Let us meet with you

            between the stage and pew,

            and become one

            on the mercy seat

            of heaven’s throne.

 

We answer your call

            with reciprocating love

            and intense fervor.

 

Lead the way

            out of the theatre

            and into the streets—

            the highways and byways,

            the nursery schools and universities,

            the offices and hospitals,

            the techno-caves and the taverns.

 

This land is Your land;

            this land is our land.

This earth is Your earth,

            and this earth is our earth.

 

So have you decreed it.

So it is.

So it will be made manifest

            even now,

            through our active agreement

            and alignment.

 

So let it be always.

Amen.
