TODAY, the U.S. Senate is set to vote on the so-called “Respect for Marriage Act.”
This deceptively named bill is designed to enshrine same-sex marriage into the American legal fabric, going far beyond the Supreme Court’s decision in Obergefell. If signed into law, this bill would jeopardize the religious freedom of millions of Americans who have sincerely held beliefs that marriage is between one man and one woman.

Alliance Defending Freedom is taking a strong stand for marriage by opposing this bill. In July, ADF led a coalition of more than 80 national and state organizations calling on Senate Minority Leader McConnell to oppose the misnamed “Respect for Marriage Act.” And in September, we sent a letter to U.S. senators on behalf of more than 2,000 churches and ministries who explained how the bill would further hostility against churches and ministries and the millions of Americans who hold decent and honorable beliefs about marriage.
And now, we need the Senate to hear from you.
The Senate is set to vote on the “Respect for Marriage Act” tomorrow. Call your two senators and ask them to vote NO. You can find your senators’ phone numbers on this page.
When you call them, express your concern about the bill and remind them about its three main problems:
- It empowers the government to punish tens of millions of Americans who wish to live according to their deeply held beliefs.
- It exposes religious individuals and organizations to predatory lawsuits.
- It could allow the IRS to target faith-based organizations by threatening their nonprofit status.
Every phone call to a senator helps. The “Respect for Marriage Act” has little to do with protecting the rights of all people—quite the opposite. Its text betrays an intent to stigmatize certain beliefs and take rights away, especially from people of faith.
Tell your senator to stand firm against this blatant threat to religious freedom and the institution of marriage.
