“Hey man how’s it going?”
The large man’s elbows rested on his knees and his breath was heavy but that didn’t stop him from responding to the guy interrupting his workout. “I’m doing good man. How bout you?”
“Pretty good,” I answered allowing my head nod with the words. “Hey I don’t wanna take up too much of your time but sometimes I feel like the Lord wants me to bless different people I meet. I wanted to jump over here real quick before I left and ask if I can bless you.”
He straightened just a bit and his eyes widened. I could see it wasn’t what he expected me to say. I don’t think he would’ve expected anyone to say that. But he pursed his lips and said, “Yeah you can do that.”
“Alright,” I said. “My name’s Jesse by the way.”
My hand completely vanished inside of his as he told me his name. “Nice to meet you.”
“You too.” I put my hand on his shoulder. “Well I just bless you with Joy and I bless you with Peace….” I continued on like that as long as the Lord led. I could feel the compassion and love of the Lord for this man as I spoke.
It wasn’t long and it wasn’t some profound theological dissertation. There was no “thus sayith the Lord” or some kind of long prophetic word. There was no prayer for physical healing or repentance and salvation. It wasn’t what we might consider ‘flashy’. It was simply encouragement and comfort and edification. But the affect wasn’t simple.
I knew instantly that something wonderful had happened by the smile he gave me when I released his shoulder. It was born from beyond the surface and betrayed the mask worn so carefully. The simple words that were spoken touched his heart in an extraordinary way.
This is what happens when honest and sincere love touches hearts. The affect of Perfect Love cannot be concealed. It doesn’t matter who we are, our circumstances, our past, or our beliefs. When someone comes to us reflecting the true love of God we cannot help but react.
Inside each one of us there is the need to be loved. And not to just be loved but to be loved by Perfect Love. To be loved by God. This need yearns and reaches out and, many times, tries to suck it out of the temporary and destructive things of this world. But when the authentic comes the heart knows. The heart recognizes and responds.
The other day the Lord spoke this to me:
“The world needs to see genuine, sincere love. There isn’t a heart out there that can stand unaffected by My love. There is no amount of pain or suffering that can completely destroy the heart. Through the worst pain imaginable, the slightest glimmer of sincere and honest love will break through it all. Be a reflection of that. Bare and reflect My love to the world.”
The smallest action motivated by Perfect Love can change someone’s life. It can reach down into the pit and pull captives out. It is powerful and effectual. And it resides and lives and makes it’s home in you. Let the world see it!
