We had just dropped a patient off at the hospital and I was strolling through the halls looking for someone we had transported earlier. I suspected this particular man had had a stroke at some point during the night before.
I approached the nurse’s station and saw the RN who was responsible for the man. I asked her what they’d found and she confirmed the man had a terrible stroke and that he probably was not going to recover.
It was then I felt the familiar nudge of the Holy Spirit telling me to go to the room the man was in. I knew I was going to minister in some way so I was a little distraught when the paramedic student I was monitoring fell in step behind me. I couldn’t very well tell her to leave but I wanted to. It certainly added a degree of discomfort to what I knew I needed to do.
We entered the room to find the man’s wife near the bed. As soon as I saw her I knew she was a believer. I could just see it. I told her I was sorry and she said, “Thank you”. I looked at my student and then back and the patient’s wife and just decided it didn’t matter who was in there. I knew what God was leading me to do so I was going to pray.
I asked the man’s wife if she would like me to pray. Her eye’s filled with tears as she told me yes. I put one hand on the man’s shoulder and held his wife’s hand with the other. I prayed for comfort. I prayed for peace. Then I prayed for healing in Jesus’ name. I prayed everything I felt led to pray. The man had been unable to respond but as I prayed he turned his head and made some sounds like he was trying to talk.
When I was finished the man’s wife wiped her eyes and thanked me. She told me how grateful she was that I stopped in. She told me her pastor was on the way. We chatted a couple of minutes more and then I left with my student close behind.
On the way out my student began asking questions about God and my experiences with Him-questions I was more than willing to answer.
I know enough about living the life Jesus lived to know that there are no formulas or any one specific model we need to strive to reflect. I have learned enough to expect extraordinary things but to let God define what that looks like in each unique situation. I’ve learned that if the person receiving feels loved it’s insanely beautiful and anything else is gravy.
