It was a typical hot, humid morning and my partner and I were responding to a woman with an unspecified injury. It was the first call of the day and sometimes that first call brings a little anxiety as I resume the role of a professional healthcare provider after a 48-hour break. But not on this morning. This particular morning my focus was on something different.
I had experienced lots of wonderful things as the Lord worked through me on my job. But I was feeling insecure on this morning. I was feeling unusually nervous about praying for strangers. So I asked God for something. I asked Him to let me know for sure that whomever we were responding to was a believer. I didn’t hear any answer in particular but I was satisfied. I really wasn’t saying that I wouldn’t pray for the person unless I knew he/she was a believer but I was asking for that security blanket.
We arrived on scene and knocked on the front door. We heard a woman’s voice shout, “Come in”, so we opened the door and walked in. We rounded the corner and found the woman hopping on one foot. Her face was twisted in pain as she bounced over to us. She was a little embarrassed as she told us that she banged her toe on one of her door jams. I was confused and asked her how she did that. She laughed at herself as she told me that she was dancing to Christian worship music and wasn't paying attention to where she was going.
I couldn’t believe it. God had answered my prayer. I asked Him for assurance and He gave it to me. I almost laughed out loud as joy filled my heart. I quickly evaluated her toe and could see that her toe clearly broken. We helped her onto the stretcher and into the rescue (ambulance). On the way to the hospital I felt the nudge of the Holy Spirit telling me that it was time and I asked her if I could pray for her.
Tears filled her eyes as she said, "Absolutely". I prayed for her and for God to heal her toe. There was no immediate change but I knew I had done what God wanted me to do and I felt peace. She began to tell me all about how she was a brand new Christian and how blessed she was to having another Christian taking care of her. We continued to talk about the love of God the rest of the way into the hospital.
We dropped her off and a couple of hours later I was back with another patient. On my way out I stopped to check on my Christian toe lady. She was about ready to leave. I asked her about the toe. She told me that the x-rays came back negative and that the doctor couldn't believe it. The toe was no longer broken! We rejoiced together for a moment before I left.
Don’t ever think that your prayer is too small, too insignificant for God. When we talk to Him, He listens. Every single time.
