I remember it like yesterday. It was early evening in a poor neighborhood in Nakuru, Kenya, during the second week of our Journey of Compassion. From the first day, when 460 people gave their lives to Christ in a downtown park, this had been a remarkable Journey. We had seen Muslims joyfully turn to Jesus; we had gotten clean water to a Masai village for the first time; hundreds had been treated in the mobile medical clinics; as always, the Lord had graciously healed hundreds of people.
But tonight, as one of the team members began to preach before a steadily growing crowd in what could best be described as a ghetto, the Holy Spirit began to move. At the back of the crowd, some of the team members began to lay hands on those who couldn’t see because of severe cataracts. Suddenly, everyone they touched was healed. There was a growing sound as person after person exclaimed that they could see. And still the Lord’s presence increased. The deaf heard; pain left; fevers vanished. But even more, there was among everyone an awareness that God was in our midst, that this was a holy time and place. Many came forward to ask Jesus into their lives, to receive the gift of a new beginning. And still they came. First the old, then young men and women. When the Impact Nations team finally left, it was with a sense of awe.
Now, nine months later, there is a church established in their midst. Almost all are new believers. More than 1,200 people gather there every week. What the Lord began that night has continued to flourish and grow.
“You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you.” (Jn 15:16 NKJ)
Fruit that remains. This is why we go to the nations. In Jn 15:8, Jesus said that this kind of fruit brings glory to the Father. This is what we ask Him to give us.
