Why I won't tell you if you don't ask.

Perfect love doesn’t keep reminding you of its expectations.

So God even when we’re having a wonderful back and forward conversation with you, we can still be miles from what you want us to be doing in the big areas of our lives?

Yes Mark. That’s what I’m saying.

But we were taught that if you’re not happy we won’t hear you.

Then explain how you could hear me speaking before you became a Christian?

Mark the reason this confuses you is that it’s the direct opposite of what Satan has taught the church to believe. He has taught you that I’m a demanding, rules-focused God. Whereas the truth is I have only one rule - ask me what to do. About everything.

I never push what I want on you Mark. If I did, then doing what I want would have no value.

We can be having a wonderful conversation, back and forward like this; and yet you can still have no real idea what I think about those big areas of your life – those areas you’re afraid of discussing with me. That’s because what I want is something you have to make an effort to seek for, discover and act on despite the fear. ‘Ask and keep on asking, demand and keep on demanding’. How does that make you feel Mark?

Confused. I was taught that when I can hear you it means you’re happy with the big things I’m doing. That’s a nice simple rule.

Too simple. I’m not a book of rules, I’m a real live God. Mark when those you love talk to you are they constantly talking about all the things they expect of you?

No.

In fact their expectations of you have always seemed pretty small haven’t they?

Pretty much.                       

But does that mean they have no expectations?

No. I’m realising that now.

You needed to keep asking until what they wanted became your focus. Then they would have told you.

Do you understand the comparison I’m making? Anyone can hear me clearly in an actual conversation like this, no matter what sort of mess they’re making of their life. They can still enjoy my company, hear me talking all the time, feel my love, yet not hear what I really want them to do.  I love you too much to force my expectations on you. Do you know anyone who pushed their expectations on those they loved?

Yes. Me.

It hurt them Mark. I’m not like that. I have to let people go ahead and make decisions that cut me to the core, even if they’re having a close conversation like this with me.

Before me the Jews had rules and laws. It kept them on the straight and narrow. After me the rules were replaced by a relationship. You can no longer simply refer to the rule book like the Jews did.  You have to ask me. I want you to get what you should and shouldn’t be doing, about all those uncomfortable subjects, straight from me.

In your own life, you have discovered the answers to many of the questions that people think are too big to ask. But only because you annoy me with questions about them so many times each day. Do I like that? I LOVE it! Even though the motive for asking me those things is often fear and self-preservation - I LOVE giving you the answers. And I’ll do the same for anyone else, no matter what their life looks like. All they have to do is keep asking, and be SERIOUS about knowing the answer.
