“Hey is there something wrong with your left ear?”
The young girl we’ll call Ruby tilted her head and threw me a quizzical look. “No, why?”
The restaurant we sat in was crowded and my friends and I were fortunate to find a seat. The girl was in 6th grade. She was a stranger to me but a familiar face to my friend who used to be a teacher. Ruby recognized my friend and ran up to say hello. It was an unexpected encounter but perhaps divinely inspired as I was starting to notice.
“Okay great,” I said. I didn’t really have the impression that it was a physical problem but rather God was wanting her to understand something else. I leaned towards her. “Sometimes God shows me things for different people. Is it okay if I share what He showed me with you?”
Ruby glanced at my friend before nodding.
I cleared my throat. “Well I saw God’s finger reach inside your ear and wipe it out. When He removed His finger there was a loud ‘POP!’
Ruby’s eyes grew wide.
“I just wanted to make sure you weren’t having any physical problems with your ear,” I continued. “What I sense the Lord wants you to know is that you are going to begin hearing His voice much more often and much clearer than you ever have before.”
She straightened and I noticed her lips twitch slightly. I smiled and continued. “The voice you’re going to hear will be gentle, the words are going to be sweet whispers as He tells you how much He loves you and what He thinks about you. It’s not going to be yelling or shouting and I think that’s going to be a contrast to how you’ve been spoken to in the past. He’s going to treat you the way you deserve to be treated.”
Tears spilled out of her doe eyes as she scrambled for a napkin. “He’s inviting you to slow dance with Him,” I told her. “He’s always been there and will always be there.”
Ruby nodded and wiped her eyes unable to speak.
I think this is a beautiful example of how important it is to hear God’s voice. Many, in fact most of the evangelical community is severely lacking in the practice of hearing His voice. It’s a serious oversight. What should be Christianity 101 has been replaced by classes on highlighting bible passages (seriously, that’s a class taught in some churches while you can’t find one on hearing God’s voice).
There are some churches that have made hearing God’s voice a priority but to many of us the idea that God will and even wants to talk to us, is a foreign concept. But if we can’t hear Him speak how are we to know how much He loves us and what He thinks about us? Because it’s written in the bible? Would that be enough from your spouse or do you need to hear it from them?
We are sheep that need to hear and know our shepherds voice. But we’re more than sheep. We are the bride. We need to know the bridegrooms voice in order for there to be intimacy.
I don’t know what was clogging Ruby’s ears and I don’t know what’s clogging yours but I do know that the first step is asking God to reveal the answer. He will. Mark Virkler wrote a phenomenal book called, 4 Key’s to Hearing God’s Voice. Richard Mull also edited the, God Speaks Bible and wrote God Speaks, Learn How To Hear God, A Journey Through The Book Of Acts. I highly recommend these resources to help you on your journey.
