Darkness can’t win!
In John chapter 8 Jesus teaches us about the Father of lies, the devil, our adversary. Jesus tells us that there is no truth in him at all, that to him the truth is a foreign language. It’s where all his power resides, in deception.
I’d like to focus on one of those lies. That is, the power of darkness.
I know there are times in which we feel like our faces are being pushed down into concrete. Sometimes we can no longer tell where we end and it begins. I understand the feeling of crushing oppression. We’d be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t.
But there is always a point in which we have the ability to decide. We feel the darkness weighing so strong we can hardly breathe and we have a choice. We can give in and experience temporary relief (whatever that looks like for each of us), or we can fight and grasp onto the loving, extended hand of Jesus.
We all understand just how much it sometimes feels like we don’t have a choice. Just how much it seems like the only option is to give in. That the power of darkness is too great. But that is nothing but a big, fat, hairy (yep, hairy) lie.
And the Light shines on in the darkness, for the darkness has never overpowered it [put it out or absorbed it or appropriated it, and is unreceptive to it]. –John 1:5
Light doesn’t extinguish in the darkness. Darkness extinguishes in the light. The only way darkness wins is if we don’t invite Jesus to shine. There are no tools darkness carries to flip off the switch against our will. The way we loose is by believing there is no hope and flipping it off ourselves.
The only power our adversary has is what we give to him. That’s why he spends so much time deceiving. If we believe his lies he gets power. If we remember the truth he is defeated. Truth is what breaks heavy chains and sets captives free. The light shines on in the darkness. It’s never ever overpowered it. And it never will.
But we must call out to Jesus in our struggles. He’ll let us have what we want. If that’s darkness then we get darkness. But if we want light He’s already there with His finger on the switch.
Cry out to the darkness the truth of how God feels about you and the hope to which He has called you. Let the darkness know that He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. Let it know that you don’t need temporary relief when you can have permanent fulfillment. Shout out that you don’t ever have to thirst again because you’ve been drinking from the well that never runs dry.
As you speak the truth you will see the light begin to shine and the darkness flee. Find the switch and step into the arms of the Light!
